Re-Making Ramekins
Life has been hard. Things have changed. I don’t think I need to say more.
So let’s just dive in, shall we! Some of you may have noticed that I have made slab-constructed ramekins in the past. Unfortunately, I seem to have this character flaw where nothing I make is ever good enough for me. It’s a bit of a bummer, and it’s definitely not one of my greatest traits, but it does keep me growing. (Nothing like a bit of self deprecation to inspire creativity). Anyway, I tend to look back and think about what I could have done differently. In the real world (with actual people) it doesn’t work, but in the studio I can do whatever I want. So I found the perfect tool to create that classic fluted texture that I regretted not adding.
Even though they mimic the classic shape and style, they now have the added advantage of having that handmade feel, because, well, they are.
It probably seems silly to most people to spend time making something that is so readily available at most stores, but I think there is a big difference between a handmade item and something that is mass produced. There is a energy that somehow lingers in a piece when it is created by an artist. Once you feel it, every dish in your home that isn’t handmade will feel dull and distant.
Don’t forget to check out my Creme Brûlée post to see how I put them to good use!
